Wisconsin Lawn Care Calendar 

These are helpful tips and recommendations for achieving a great looking, healthy lawn in our specific northern climate. This lawn care schedule is based on material produced by the University of Wisconsin- Madison, Wisconsin Horticulture Division of Extension.

Spring

- De thatch lawn & clean up seasonal debris 

- Aerate & overseed 

- Mow at 3 inches or higher

- Forsythia bloom means time for crabgrass or broadleaf pre emergent

- Around 2nd mow apply slow release nitrogen fertilizer 

- Aerate when soil moisture levels are adequate, at the rate of 15-20 cores per sq ft

- Seed in late April/early May 

 

Summer

- Water lawn, about 1 inch per week required to maintain green color and active growth 

- Do not remove more than one third the grass height each time you mow

- Fertilizer should be applied to watered lawns at the rate of less than 1 pound of nitrogen per 1000 sq ft

- Treat with insecticide for white grubs if damage is significant 

- Late August is ideal to prep for seeding or herbicide application

 

Fall

- September is ideal for establishing a new lawn in Wisconsin 

- Late August into September is ideal to renovate lawns with power raking and slit seeding 

- Sept 1-15 slow release nitrogen fertilizer 

- Early to mid fall is ideal for broadleaf weed control applications 

- Core aerating 

- Clean leaves and debris & mow grass shorter in preparation for winter
